Women's Tennis Team Defeats Sam Houston State, 6-1

HUNTSVILLE, Texas - The Southern Miss women's tennis team won its first match of the season, downing Sam Houston State, 6-1, Monday.
"I was pleased with the way we stepped up today, having to play with Brittany Serret, who has the flu," coach Randy Rowley said. "We came out and played a solid match. The kind of team we were last season carried over to today."
Southern Miss opened the match, winning the doubles' point to take the early, 1-0, lead. Stephanie Dellocono and Zoe Lee gave the Lady Eagles their first win of the day with an 8-2 win over Patricia Manzur and Roxana Martinez (SHSU) at No. 3. Sherry Price and Shannon Rogers followed with an 8-4 win over Nora Kuruc and Stasa Vujosevic (SHSU) at No. 2. Ali Blackett and Lauren Gutterman lost to Irina Sotnikova and Peta Taylor (SHSU), 8-5.
In singles competition, Lee put the Lady Eagles up, 2-0, after a straight set win over Vujosevic (SHSU), 6-0, 6-1, at No. 4. Natalia Parrado followed with a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 5, by a score of 6-1, 6-4, over Lilit Martierosyan.
Sam Houston State recorded its only point at No. 1, when Sotnikova (SHSU) knocked off Price, 7-5, 6-3.
The Lady Eagles clinched the match with a straight-set win at No. 2, by Blackett's 7-5, 6-4, win over Taylor (SHSU). Rounding out the remaining matches were Gutterman winning at No. 5 in a three-setter against Manzur (SHSU), 6-3, 1-6, 6-1, and Dellocono downing Kuruc at No. 3, 7-5, 2-6, 6-2.
Southern Miss remains on the road, traveling to Houston to face the Cougars at 1 p.m., Tuesday.
