HATTIESBURG, Miss - With the 2008 baseball season less than a week away several Southern Miss baseball players we honored by national and regional publications this week.
Baseball America named 1B Trey Sutton and SS Brian Dozier to their preseason All-Conference USA team. The magazine also selected Southern Miss as one of the four C-USA teams that should earn a NCAA Regional birth.
Collegebaseballinsider.com polled the C-USA coaches for its preseason awards and choose pitcher Barry Bowden (tied with Houston's Wes Musick) as the most underrated pitcher in the conference, Trey Sutton as one of the three best pure hitters in the conference and Sutton also tied with Rice's Aaron as the hitter you would least like to face.
SEbaseball.com took an in depth look at the top 80 teams in the southeastern region and ranked the Golden Eagles 24th. Of the teams that Southern Miss has on its 2008 schedule every team in the southeastern region is ranked in the top 80, with the exception Mississippi Valley State. Cal State Fullerton, Cal State Northridge and Miami (Ohio) were not considered in this poll due to geographical location.
Southern Miss will open the 2008 season Friday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. vs. Lipscomb University.
