Volleyball Downs Marshall in Four, 3-1

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Southern Miss downed Marshall in four games, 3-1, by the scores of 25-18, 14-25, 25-21, 25-18, in Conference USA action Sunday afternoon.
Southern Miss improved to 16-12 overall and 6-9 in league play. The 16 wins are the most for Coach Ricci Luyties, surpassing the 15 in 2006.
Stevi Cherry and Angela Hlavaty led the way for Southern Miss with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Maia Ivanova tallied 14 digs, followed by Ashley Petrinec with 13 and Kelsea Seymour added 10 digs to go with 36 assists.
Jalicia Ross paced the Herd with 11 kills and 10 total blocks, while Megan Carlson recorded 17 digs. Southern Miss used a 9-2 run midway through the first set in defeating Marshall, 25-18. Six different Golden Eagles recorded at least one kill.
Marshall came back in the second set, dominating from start to finish for a 25-14 win. The Herd popped out to a 5-2 lead in the third set, but Southern Miss had a 6-0 run taking an 8-5 lead.
Marshall regrouped and tied the set at 11-11. From there, the Golden Eagles out scored Marshall 13-2 on their way to a 25-21 win.
The Golden Eagles carried their momentum into the fourth set, finishing with a 25-18 win. The score was only tied once before Southern Miss took the lead for good using an 8-3 run early.
Southern Miss concludes its regular season at UCF on Nov. 15 in Orlando, Fla., before heading to the C-USA Championship in Memphis, Tenn., Nov. 20-23.
