HATTIESBURG, Miss. The Southern Miss women's tennis team concluded their annual Fall Classic on Sunday. The three day tournament featured seven teams, including Tennessee Tech, Troy, UNO, Nicholls State, Northwestern State, Southeastern Louisiana and Southern Miss.
In doubles action, the Lady Eagles walked away with four wins. Sophomore Zoe Lee and newcomer Alexandra Kaluza defeated Daniela Posada and Adna Curakovic of Northwestern State, 9-7. Junior Lauren Gutterman and newcomer Elja van Berlo also recorded two wins for Southern Miss, defeating Florina Nosca and Sanja Stanojcic of Nicholls State, 8-6, and Kir Kemp and Ceara Howey of UNO, 8-6. The doubles pair of Kaluza and sophomore Shannon Rogers also finished with a win against Evgenia Yartsev and Joanna Corkern of Tennessee Tech, 8-5.
The team also recorded three wins in singles action. Newcomers Kaluza and van Berlo both posted wins. Kaluza defeated UNO's Anita Racz, 6-0, 6-2, while van Berlo recorded a win against Iva Velkovska of Southeastern Louisiana, 7-5, 6-2. Rogers also finished with a win over Suncica Strkic of Northwestern State, 6-4, 2-6, 10-2.
"I thought we played hard in every match," said Head Coach Randy Rowley. "Obviously we didn't get the result we wanted, but it was a good learning experience four our first-time players."
Southern Miss returns only four letterwinners from last year's team. Rowley welcomes three newcomers to the squad in two sophomores and one freshman.
The Lady Eagles will conclude their fall season this weekend, November 7-9, at the Houston Invitational.
