Volleyball Team Gets Past UTEP, 3-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team snapped a four-match losing streak, defeating UTEP, 3-1 (25-21, 25-19, 24-26, 25-15), in Conference USA action Thursday.
The match was designated as part of the "Dip Pink" initiative, drawing the largest crowd of the season (472).
Angela Hlavaty paced the Golden Eagles (14-11, 4-8) with 16 kills followed by Sarah Jane Bowden and Ashley Petrinec with 11 kills apiece. Petrinec tallied a team-high 18 digs with Maia Ivanova adding 13 and Kelsea Seymour chipping in 11.
Amy Sanders registered a match-high 17 kills to go with 13 digs for UTEP (6-19, 2-9). Casey McCannelly added 11 kills, while KeAnne Langford recorded 18 digs.
Both team battled back and forth to start the first set. With the set knotted at 8-8, Southern Miss then outscored UTEP 11-5, taking a 19-13 lead. The Miners were able to get within three points on three occasions, but the Golden Eagles took the first set, 25-21.
Southern Miss jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the second set, but UTEP fought back to tie the set three times with the last coming at 12-12. From there, the Golden Eagles pushed scoring three straight points and continued to maintain the lead the rest of the way in a 25-19 win.
The third set featured 14 ties and eight lead changes. UTEP put down 17 kills, while hitting .256. The Miners trailed by three, 23-20, then, outscored the Golden Eagles, 6-1, to take set three, 26-24.
In set four, Southern Miss took a 3-3 tie and turned it into a 6-3 lead. The Miners got within one points, 9-8, before the Golden Eagles out scored UTEP, 10-3 for a 19-11 lead. USM closed out the set for a 25-15 win.
Southern Miss finished the match with a .229 attack percentage and 11.0 team blocks. Seymour added 49 assists to record a double-double. The Golden Eagles also had nine service aces.
Southern Miss returns to action Tuesday, hosting Tulane at 7 p.m., to close out the home portion of its schedule. Two seniors will be honored after the match, Petrinec and Stevi Cherry.
