HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss soccer team fell 2-0 in their Conference USA home opener Friday evening at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex to East Carolina.
With the loss today Southern Miss dropped to 1-2 in C-USA play and 5-5-1 overall. East Carolina improved to 3-0 in the conference and 8-3 overall.
"East Carolina is a very good team that is extremely disciplined in what they do," head coach Scott Ebke said. "They do not take a large amount of shots, but they make you pay when you make a mistake. We had two mistakes that cost us today."
Southern Miss outshot the Pirates 12-11 in the match.
The game appeared to be headed to a scoreless tie at halftime before ECU's Alexis Foltz found the back of the net in the 43rd minute to put the Pirates up 1-0.
ECU added to their lead in the 58th minute as Blair Heffner was able to score from inside the box for the game's final goal.
Southern Miss did have their chances however, in the 81st minute as the Golden Eagles played the ball into the box off a set piece and Renee Hrappman fired a shot just inside the near post that a ECU defender kept out of the net after the Pirate keeper was beaten on the play.
The Golden Eagles suffered their fifth defeat of the season and the fourth time they have been shutout, Southern Miss is 5-1-1 when they tally at least one goal this season.
The Golden Eagles will return to the pitch Sunday afternoon as they host Marshall in another Conference USA tilt. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m.
"We are hosting a very tough Marshall team on Sunday, we have to mentally refocus and keep our bodies rested," Ebke added. "It's a long road to Houston (site of the 2008 C-USA Tournament) and if we want to get there we have to play better than we did today."
