Volleyball Takes On UTEP In "Dig Pink" Match

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss looks to snap a four-match losing streak when the Golden Eagles host UTEP Thursday at 7 p.m., in Reed Green Coliseum. The match has been designated as the "Dig Pink" match.
The Southern Miss volleyball squad has teamed up with Southern Miss HPR (Human Performance & Recreation) graduate students to help raise funds for the Side-Out Foundation. HPR grad students will be selling raffle tickets and t-shirts with the proceeds will be distributed among research teams focused on target therapies and molecular profiling as well as "living with cancer" organizations nationwide.
The events will include breast cancer survivor motivational speeches. Some of the raffled items included are Southern Miss autographed items from each varsity sport team, as well as Southern Miss apparel and gift certificates from local business.
The Golden Eagle volleyball team will also host a free clinic prior to the match for students in grades 1-8. Following the match, the team will be available for signing autographs. Southern Miss (13-11, 3-8) is coming off a pair of C-USA losses at UAB and Memphis. Angela Hlavaty registered back-to-back double-doubles. Maia Ivanova registered her fifth 20-plus dig match.
Five Golden Eagles have recorded 157 or more kills this season, led by Ashley Petrinec with 205, followed by Hlavaty with 201 apiece. Sears and Bowden lead the team in total blocks and attack percentage. Maia Ivanova leads the team in digs with 330.
The Golden Eagles own an attack percentage of .165, while averaging 11.90 kills and 13.59 digs per set.
UTEP (6-18, 2-8) comes into the match having lost eight of its last nine matches. The Miners are paced by Amy Sanders with a team-high 321 kills and 240 digs. Setter Patty Jarmoc has 878 assists. As a team, the Miners are averaging 11.74 kills and 14.31 digs per set to go with 145 service aces. UTEP leads the series with Southern Miss 3-2.
Following the UTEP match, Southern Miss closes out its home portion of its schedule against Tulane. The 2008 seniors will be honored following the match.
