HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss volleyball team will be one of the several hundred high schools and college teams participating in the "Dig Pink" initiative when the Golden Eagles play host UTEP, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m., in Reed Green Coliseum.
"Dig Pink" is a Breast Cancer awareness rally that the Side-Out Foundation is holding during the month of October. They are attempting to make a large statement by holding potentially thousands of featured High School and College matches across the country. Southern Miss has agreed to be one of those institutions that will help educate and raise funds to eradicate this terrible disease.
The Southern Miss volleyball squad has teamed up with Southern Miss HPR (Human Performance & Recreation) graduate students to help raise funds for the Side-Out Foundation.
HPR grad students will be selling raffle tickets and t-shirts two weeks prior to the match and up until game day. The proceeds will be distributed among research teams focused on target therapies and molecular profiling as well as "living with cancer" organizations nationwide.
The events will include breast cancer survivor motivational speeches. Some of the raffled items included are Southern Miss autographed items from each varsity sport team, as well as Southern Miss apparel and gift certificates from local business.
The Golden Eagle volleyball team will also host a free clinic prior to the match for students in grades 1-8. Following the match, the team will be available for signing autographs.
Donations to the Side-Out Foundation can be made by visiting the web site at www.sideoutvolleyball.org.
