Baseball Opens Fall Season with 10-0 Win Over Carey

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss used an eight run first inning to defeat cross-town William Carey 10-0 Sunday afternoon at Pete Taylor Park.
"I thought it was a good first game for us, it really game me an idea where this team is at right now," head coach Corky Palmer said. "I thought we played tremendous defense and pitched very well today."
Southern Miss used seven different pitchers to limit the Crusaders to seven hits in the 12 inning exibition. Todd McInnis and Moses Munoz were both perfect in their two innings, while Scott Copeland and Wade Weathers faced the minimum hitters in their two innings of work.
The middle infield tandem of Brian Dozier and James Ewing showed they were in midseason form turning four double plays on the afternoon.
At the plate, nine different players collected hits with Brian Dozier leading the charge going three-for-four with four RBI. Corey Stevens also added in two hits and two RBI as well.
The Golden Eagles erupted for eight runs in the bottom of the first off William Carey ace Matt Carter, chasing the righty after only two-thirds of an inning. The opening inning eruption was keyed by Joey Archer's bases loaded single and a two-RBI single by Travis Graves. Stevens picked up his two RBI with a double to left-center field in the first inning as well.
The Golden Eagles will return to action again next Sunday as they host Nicholls State at 2:00 p.m. for another fall exhibition game.
