Alabama Sweeps Women's Tennis Team, 7-0

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Southern Miss women's tennis team dropped its season opener to Alabama, 7-0, Sunday at the Hank Crisp Indoor Facility.
The Crimson Tide took the doubles point by sweeping the doubles' competition. Alice Tunaru and Tiffany Welcher (UA) downed Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. Then claimed the doubles' point when Meritt Emery and Bianca Svensson (UA) knocked off Ali Blackett and Shannon Rogers at No. 3 doubles, 8-5. The Tide completed the sweep with a win at No. 1 doubles behind Paulina Bigos and Andrea Brenes (UA) defeating Sherry Price and Brittany Serret, 8-6. Rounding out the doubles' play, Ali Nolen and Elise Wettermark defeated Natalia Parrado and Zoe Lee, 8-2.
Alabama (1-0) got its second point of the match, posting a win at No. 4 singles with Emery (UA) defeating Dellocono, 6-1, 6-4. The Tide extended its lead to 3-0, behind Welcher's 6-3, 6-1, win over Price at No. 1 singles.
Alabama clinched the match with a win at No. 2 singles. Tunaru (UA) downed Serret, 6-0, 6-1. Svensson fought off Gutterman at No. 6 singles and won 7-6, 6-1. Brenes outlasted Lee at No. 5 singles, 7-6, 6-2. Blackett took Bigos (UA) three sets, but lost, 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.
Rounding out the singles play, Wettermark (UA) defeated Rogers, 6-1, 6-3, and Nolen downed Parrado, 6-1, 6-1.
Southern Miss (0-1) begins a three-game road swing, Feb. 3, with a match at Lamar, before heading to Sam Houston State (Feb. 4) and Houston (Feb. 5).
