Volleyball Team Falls To Oakland University In Three

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- - The Golden Eagle volleyball team concluded their play in the State Farm Bearcat Invitational Saturday evening, losing to Oakland University in three games, 3-0 (30-25, 30-27, 30-21).
Morgan Johnson led Southern Miss (0-3) with 13 kills, while Ashley Petrinec added nine kills and a team-high 20 digs. Three other Golden Eagles tallied double-digit digs included Maia Ivanova with 19, Angela Hlavaty with 13 and Amy Flarity with 12. Oakland (1-2) was led by Amy Golem with 16 kills. Lauren Duquette recorded a match-high 25 digs.
The Grizzlies jumped out to an early lead and eventually building an eight-point lead, 18-10, before Southern Miss put together a 9-1 run, knotting the game at 19-19. Oakland outscored the Golden Eagles 11-6 down the stretch to take game one, 30-25. Johnson and Amanda Huntoon combined for nine kills.
In game two, Oakland fought back from a 16-9 deficit using a 12-5 run to tie the game at 21-21. The Golden Eagles pushed ahead, 25-23, but the Grizzlies outscored Southern Miss, 5-2, to take game two, 30-27.
Southern Miss recorded only 10 kills in game three, while Oakland put down 22 on its way to a 30-21 win. Southern Miss led early, 6-3, but Oakland used a 10-3 run to take the lead for good. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to four, 22-18, but Oakland held on for the 30-21 win.
Southern Miss' Mari Ruddick was named to the all-tournament team, along with Oakland's Lauren Duquette, Maryland's Katie Usher and Beth Gilming, Cincinnati's Jenny Custer and Jessica Elley. UC's Jessie Nevitt was named the tournament's most valuable player.
Southern Miss returns to action, Aug. 31-Sept. 1, when the team travels to Ruston, La., for the Louisiana Tech Tournament. The Golden Eagles will play Arkansas-Pine Bluff at 3:30 p.m., followed by a match against Central Arkansas at 7 p.m.
