Maryland Sweeps Southern Miss In Volleyball Action, 3-0

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- - The Southern Miss volleyball team fell to Maryland in three games, 30-28, 31-29, 30-26, Saturday morning in the State Farm Bearcat Invitational.
Southern Miss (0-2) had three players record double-digit kills, led by Morgan Johnson with 11, Mari Ruddick and Ashley Petrinec added 10 kills each. Amy Flarity led the team with 12 digs and Maia Ivanova added 11 digs. Katie Usher led Maryland with 12 kills, while Beth Gillming recorded a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.
"I felt like we could have won all three games in this match," Head Coach Ricci Luyties said. "We played better today, but right now we just have to clean up some things and play consistently."
Maryland (2-0) used a 7-0 run late in game one to take a 30-28 win. Southern Miss led 23-19, when the Terps scored the next seven points, taking a 26-23 lead. The Golden Eagles fought back to tie the game at 27-27, but Maryland outscored the Golden Eagles 3-1 to seal the win. Petrinec put down five kills for the Eagles with no attack errors.
Maryland popped out to the early lead, leading by as many as four points, when the Golden Eagles used a 9-4 run to take a 13-12 lead. Both team battled back and forth, until Southern Miss built a 29-27 lead. The Terps then fought off two game points, closing out the game on a 4-0 run, taking game two, 31-29. Morgan Johnson and Petrinec combined for nine of the 16 kills.
Southern Miss took the early lead in game three, building a 17-11 advantage, before Maryland used an 8-1 run to take a 19-18 lead. The Golden Eagles regained the lead following kills by Stevi Cherry and Johnson and a Maryland attack error. The Terps then ran off four-straight points to push their lead to 24-22. Southern Miss battled back to tie the game at 25-25, but Maryland ended the game on a 5-1 run for a 30-26 win.
Southern Miss concludes play at 4 p.m., today, with a match against Oakland. Following this tournament, the Golden Eagles remain on the road, competing at the Louisiana Tech Tournament, Aug. 31-Sept. 1, in Ruston, La. Southern Miss will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff and Central Arkansas on Friday.
