HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss redshirt junior right-hand pitcher Barry Bowden was named the Conference USA Co-Pitcher of the Week as announced by the conference office this morning.
This marks the fourth Southern Miss pitcher to be honored this season, marking the first year that four different individuals were named to the team and tying the 1996 Golden Eagle squad with four pitchers selected for Conference USA Pitcher of the Week honors.
Ryan Belanger received the honor on Feb. 25 for his performance against Georgia Southern in the Wiregrass Classic on Feb. 23, David Clark was selected for the honor last week for his complete-game shutout against Louisiana-Lafayette, and Todd McInnis was selected for the honor for his one-hit performance against Alabama on March 6.
Bowden threw the first nine-inning complete game of his career and second complete game this season at No. 25 East Carolina on Saturday. He allowed just one run, scattered four hits and struck out seven without walking a batter for his fifth win of the season. Bowden gave up a first inning solo homer, two hits in the third inning and one in fourth inning. He retired 17 of the final 19 batters, with the two reaching on a hit by pitch in the sixth inning and an error in the seventh inning. Only one runner went beyond second base and only five reached second base for the entire game. Bowden has now won his last four conference starts.
Southern Miss (27-19, 8-10 Conference USA) hosts Marshall (19-23, 4-10 C-USA) for a three-game Conference USA weekend series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field on Friday-Sunday, May 4-6. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., and Saturday's and Sunday's games will begin at 1 p.m.
