Golden Eagles Even Series With 6-4 Win Over UAB

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - James Ewing hit a two-run homer in the first inning, and Keith Winstead hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lead Southern Miss to a 6-4 win in game two of the three-game Conference USA weekend series, today, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field in front of 3,616 in attendance.
Barry Bowden (4-2) earned his fourth win of the season, including his third-straight, pitching six innings, giving up three runs on five hits, walking three and striking out four batters. Patrick Ezell (7) earned his seventh save of the season, pitching the final two innings, giving up three hits and striking out one batter.
UAB starting pitcher Mitch Kloskowski (4-4) was credited with the loss, pitching 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits, walking four and striking out one batter.
Southern Miss (24-16, 5-9 C-USA) scored six runs on eight hits, while UAB (18-23, 5-6 C-USA) scored four runs on nine hits and committed three errors. UAB left 10 runners on base, while Southern Miss stranded eight.
James Ewing finished with two hits and three RBIs, Jody Blount had two hits, Drew Carson finished with two hits and Winstead had a hit with two RBIs. Ryne Lovdahl led UAB with two hits and Keedy finished with two RBIs.
Southern Miss took the early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Trey Sutton led off the inning with walk, before James Ewing hit a homer off the scoreboard in left center field.
The Blazers cut the lead in half with a run in the second inning. Lovdahl led off the inning with a single through the left side, advanced to third on JR Bond's double to right center and scored when Jonathan Merritt flew out to right field.
The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 3-1 in the fourth inning when Winstead scored on a bases loaded walk. Winstead reached on a one-out walk, stole second base and advanced to third on Chris Matesich's walk. Sutton singled through the left side to load the bases before James Ewing walked.
Southern Miss struck for three more runs in the fifth inning to extend its lead to 6-1. Blount doubled to right field to lead off the inning and scored when Drew Carson hit a one-out double to left center field. Winstead blasted the two-run homer to left center to drive in Carson for the second and third runs of the inning.
UAB scored three runs in the seventh inning to cut the Southern Miss lead to 6-4. Tyler Rollin was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and Brint Hardy walked before pitcher Tyler Conn came on in relief of Bowden. Phil Bell reached on a one-out walk to load the bases, before Keedy hit a two-run double to right center to plate Rollin and Hardy. Lovdahl reached on a fielder's choice to short to bring in Bell for the third run of the inning.
Southern Miss and UAB play the rubber game of the three-game weekend series on Sunday at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field at 1 p.m.
