Women's Tennis Team Falls to UAB, 4-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- - The women's tennis team dropped its final regular season match, losing to UAB, 4-3, in Conference USA action on Sunday afternoon at the Brook Highland Racquet Club.
"The team competed well today, but unfortunately we put ourselves in a position of, possibly, not receiving one of the five byes heading into the conference tournament next week," Head Coach Randy Rowley said. "We are very disappointed with the loss, but we will have to regroup and fight a little harder in order for us advance in the tournament."
No. 74 Southern Miss (16-4) opened the match, winning the doubles' point, when Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman defeated Gulsah Esen and Nischa Maier-Knapp (UAB), 8-6, at No. 2 doubles. Ali Blackett and Grace Kammerer outlasted Antonia Nugent and Magdalena Czernik, at No. 3 doubles, 9-8.
Sherry Price and Brittany Serret lost to Annemieke Elsholz and Julia von Samson, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles.
UAB (14-1) bounced back to take four of the six singles. Price downed Esen in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, at No. 1 singles and Ali Blackett knocked off Maier-Knapp, 6-3, 7-6, at No. 3 singles.
The Blazers won at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 singles. UAB's Elsholz clinched the match of the Blazers at No. 5 singles in two consecutive set tie-breakers, 7-6, 7-6.
Both teams head to the Conference USA Tennis Championship, April 19-22, in Tulsa, Okla.
