Baseball Hosts Nationally-Ranked Ole Miss in Midweek Game

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss baseball team, who won 2-of-3 at UCF in a Conference USA weekend series, hosts No. 13 Ole Miss on Wednesday, April 11, at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field at 6:30 p.m.

This marks the 112th meeting between the two schools, one of the Golden Eagles' longest running series. Ole Miss leads the series, 70-41. The two teams met at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss., on March 27, with the Rebels coming from behind and winning, 6-5.
The Golden Eagles (20-13, 3-6 Conference USA) are coming off a 3-1 week, including a 13-5 midweek win against Nicholls State and winning 2-of-3 at UCF in a Conference USA weekend series. Southern Miss lost 5-4 on Friday, won 8-3 on Saturday and 10-0 on Sunday in a game ended after seven innings because of the conference's mercy rule.
Ole Miss (24-10, 7-5 SEC) (No. 13 Collegiate Baseball/15 NCBWA/No. 16 USA Today/Coaches Poll/No. 20 Baseball America) was 3-1 last week as well, winning 19-3 against Arkansas State and winning 2-of-3 against Georgia last weekend, winning Friday, 9-8, losing Saturday, 4-3 and winning 9-0 on Sunday.
Southern Miss his hitting .281 with 51 doubles, three triples and 19 home runs, while Ole Miss is hitting .318 with 55 doubles, five triples and 30 home runs. The Golden Eagle pitching staff has posted a 3.89 ERA with 237 strikeouts, 101 walks and opponent hitters are hitting .254 against the staff. The Rebels' pitching staff has posted a 2.89 ERA with 300 strikeouts, only 112 walks and has held opponent hitters to a .226 batting average.
Southern Miss will send redshirt junior right-hander Mike Cashion to the mound to face sophomore left-hander Brett Buckvich.
Cashion, who is making his second start of the season, made his first against Ole Miss at Trustmark Park on March 27. He has made four appearances and one start, registering an 0-0 record with a 6.30 ERA in 10.0 innings pitched. In his first start against Ole Miss, he pitched 3.1 innings, giving up three runs on four hits and walked two batters.
Buckvich has pitched in nine games and started seven, posting a 4-1 record with a 3.64 ERA in 42.0 innings pitched. He has struck out 27, walked 13 and held opponents to .241 batting average. In his last start against Arkansas State, he pitched four innings, giving up three runs on four hits, walking three and striking out three batters, earning his fourth win of the season.
The Golden Eagles are led offensively by redshirt junior designated hitter Trey Cuevas. He is hitting .351 with three doubles, six home runs, 13 hit by pitch and 21 RBIs. Junior first baseman Trey Sutton is hitting .346 with a team-leading nine doubles, one triple, four home runs, 19 walks and a team-leading 27 RBIs. Sophomore shortstop Brian Dozier is hitting .305 with seven doubles, nine walks and 11 RBIs, and sophomore third baseman James Ewing is hitting .296 with three doubles, one home run and 14 RBIs.
The Rebels are led by junior outfielder Justin Henry, who his hitting .418 with eight doubles, two triples and 24 RBIs. Freshman outfielder Jordan Henry is hitting .360 with two doubles, one home run and 11 RBIs, and junior shortstop Zack Cozart is hitting .333 eight doubles, three home runs and 24 RBIs.
After Wednesday's game, Southern Miss continues its current homestand, hosting conference-rival Tulane as part of EagleFest Weekend for a three-game weekend series on April 13-15. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's at 4 p.m., and Sunday's at 1 p.m.
