Women's Tennis Team Knocks Off Houston, 4-3

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- - The women's tennis team recorded its ninth win of the season, knocking off Conference USA foe Houston, 4-3, on Sunday morning in Memphis.
The Lady Eagles improve to 9-1 overall and 2-1 in C-USA play, while Houston drops to 9-4 and 1-1.
"I am proud of the team and what they are accomplishing," Head Coach Randy Rowley said. "These seven players are all about being a team and that is what has been a lot of fun. They don't complain about being sore, or injuries, or the early morning practices. They want to go out and be successful and help each other and that's starting to show. I am happy with the results."
Southern Miss opened the match, sweeping the doubles competition. Sherry Price and Brittany Serret made quick work of Loli Gomez and Lelia Salek (UH), not dropping a point at No. 1 doubles, 8-0. The freshmen duo of Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman clinched the doubles' points, downing Rebecca Franzi and Anna Djananova (UH), 8-1. Ali Blackett and Grace Kammerer finished off the sweep with an 8-4 win at No. 3 doubles, over Vicky Simpson and Neila Starratt.
Southern Miss pushed ahead, 2-1, following a following a 6-3, 6-1, win at No. 4 singles by Dellocono over Franzi.
Houston got its first point of the match, when Salek defeated Price in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. Houston then knotted the match at 2-2 with a win at No. 6 singles, when Simpson posted a 6-4, 6-2, win over Kammerer.
Southern Miss broke back with a win at No. 5 singles when Gutterman won in straight sets, 7-5, 6-2, give the Lady Eagles a 3-2 lead. Blackett clinched the match with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 win at No. 3 singles over Djananova.
Houston's Gomez ended the match with a three-set win over Serret, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4.
Southern Miss returns to action when the Lady Eagles host Southern University on Sunday at 2 p.m., at Tatum Park.
