GULFPORT, Miss. -- - women's tennis team defeated Long Island, 4-0, on Saturday at the Bayou Bluff in Gulfport, Miss.
"Today was a good mental win for us," Head Coach Randy Rowley said. "Yesterday was a very taxing match for us, and we knew Long Island would come out and play hard today. Also, in the back of our minds, we were thinking about playing Troy tomorrow, which would be a good win for our program. They have been in the rankings all season."
Southern Miss (14-2) opened match by winning the doubles' points. Sherry Price and Brittany Serret downed Liliana Cortes and Merve Koksal at No. 1 doubles. Freshmen Stephanie Dellocono and Lauren Gutterman won their fourth straight match at No. 2 doubles with an 8-5 win over H'Ann Johnson and Xenia Roman. The No. 3 doubles were suspended.
Price put the Eagles up 2-0 with her win at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-1, against Johnson (LIU). Kammerer added another point for Southern Miss with her 6-1, 6-1, win over Roman at No. 5 singles. Gutterman then clinched the match at No. 4 singles, following a 6-2, 6-2, win against Cortes.
No. 2, 3, and 6 singles were suspended following Gutterman's win to clinch the match.
Both teams will be in action on the final day of the Lady Eagle Classic. Long Island will play West Virginia at 10 a.m., while Southern Miss will take on Troy at 11 a.m.
