HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Baseball Program wore green jerseys to commemorate St. Patrick's Day in its game today against Kent State at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field.
After the game, the green jerseys, donated by Nick Welch and Kate Lyon from Big Buck Sports, as well as Russell Athletics, were sold in both a silent auction, as well as a live auction. A grand total of $13,000 was collected from the sale of the jerseys.
"The Southern Miss Department of Athletics would like to thank Nick Welch and Kate Lyon from Big Buck Sports and Russell Athletics for donating the jerseys for the players to wear, as well for auction," said Scott Carr, Southern Miss Deputy Director of Athletics. "This was an outstanding event that raised a lot of money for the baseball program. The money will be split in several areas. It will go to the Eagle Club to help endow baseball scholarships, to the Dugout Club to help underwrite expenses of the baseball program and to help build bathrooms and concession stands under the new press box and suites."
Junior first baseman Trey Sutton's jersey was the top selling item, going for $1,700, followed by Head Coach Corky Palmer's and junior designated hitter Trey Cuevas jersey's selling for $700, then sophomore outfielder Michael Ewings for $675 and sophomore outfielder Luke Adkins for $525 to round out the top five selling jerseys.
