HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Director of Athletics Richard Giannini has announced that the Boise State football game has been moved to Thursday, Sept. 27, and will be televised on ESPN at 6:30 p.m., CT.
"This gives our football program another opportunity to showcase itself to the nation on ESPN," Giannini said. "The Boise State game is a marquee match-up that attracts a lot of national attention and gives our student-athletes an opportunity to play against a team that went undefeated last season and beat a very good Oklahoma team in the Fiesta Bowl."
With the Boise State game being moved to Thursday night, Sept. 27, it marks the fourth non-Saturday game the Golden Eagles will play in the upcoming season. Southern Miss will face Rice at M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg, Miss., on Wednesday, Oct. 3, and then will play on back-to-back Sundays on Oct. 21, and Oct. 28, against Marshall in Huntington, W.Va., and UCF at "The Rock", respectively.
With the game being televised on ESPN, it marks the fourth game broadcast on one of the ESPN Family of Networks for the third year in a row. Last season, the Golden Eagles appeared on one of the ESPN Networks against UCF, Tulsa, Memphis and Virginia Tech during the regular season and the championship game against Houston and the GMAC Bowl against Ohio was also broadcast on the ESPN Network.
Southern Miss begins spring practice next week on Tuesday, March 20, at 3:30 p.m., at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility. The Golden Eagles will practice the NCAA-mandated 15 times and will complete spring practices with the annual Black-Gold Game as part of Eaglefest Weekend on Saturday, April 14, at 1 p.m.
Southern Miss finished 9-5 in 2006, won the Conference USA East Division and defeated Ohio University, 28-7, in the GMAC Bowl on Jan. 7. The Golden Eagles return 15 starters and 41 letterwinners from last year's team.
