BATON ROUGE, La. - Nationally-ranked LSU earned four runs in the third inning and five in the fourth to shutout Southern Miss softball 9-0, today, at Tiger Park, in the Purple & Gold Challenge in front of 618 in attendance.
LSU scored four runs in the top of the third inning to take the lead over Southern Miss. Shannon Stein singled up the middle, before being sent home on Rachel Mitchell's two-out home run. On the next play, Leslie Klein tripled to the left field gap and advanced home on Quinlan Duhon's double to center field.
The Lady Tigers added five more runs in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 9-0 and to enforce the eight-run rule after five innings.
LSU (15-1) finished the game with 10 hits, while holding the Lady Eagles to none. Pitcher Dani Hofer (6-9) recorded 13 strikeouts, the most Southern Miss has struck out in a single game this season. Shea Naramore (3-7) pitched 2.2 innings with one strikeout, receiving the loss.
Southern Miss continues play in the Purple & Gold Challenge on Sunday, competing against Troy at 9 a.m. and Louisiana Tech at 3:45 p.m.
