Basketball Lady Eagles Host Third-Straight Game, Entertain Mercer

HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- - The Southern Miss women's basketball team plays its third-straight game, hosting Mercer Friday at 7 p.m. The contest will be broadcast over WXHB-FM 96.5 with the "Voice of the Lady Eagles" Jason Baker providing play-by-play action with former coach Kay James as the color analyst.
Southern Miss (2-0) placed five players in double figures for the second time in as many games in a 94-52 win over McNeese State. Pauline Love led the way a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds to go with four assists and four steals. Stephanie Helgeson came off the bench to scored 16 points, followed by Andrea Barber with 15, Kendra Reed added 14 and Tanesha Washington chipped in 12 points. The Lady Eagles finished the game shooting an impressive 57.6 percent from the field, including 55 percent from behind the arc. The team had 29 assists.
Love leads the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 22 points and 10 rebounds per game. Four other players (Reed, Washington, Helgeson, Liz Biland) are averaging in double figures. Reed also leads the team in assists. The Lady Eagles are shooting 53.7 percent from the field, including 43.9 percent from behind the arc and 77.8 percent from the line. The team is averaging 43.0 rebounds per game.
Mercer comes in with a 2-1 record, following a loss to Florida A&M, 78-57. Sara Russell led the Bears with 16 points, including 8-of-8 shooting from the line. Shaquita Bell and Cristin Seymour chipped in 14 and 12 points, respectively.
The Bears return five letterwinners, including three starters from last year's 5-25 squad. Head Coach Janell Jones is in her first season at the helm of the Bears' program. Bell leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.3 points, while Russell is averaging 13.0 points and a team-high 6.7 rebounds.
The series between the two teams is tied at 2-2.
Following the Mercer game, Southern Miss remains at home to host Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday, Nov. 20.
