NEW ORLEANS, La. -- - Tulane scored 25 points off 28 Southern Miss turnovers in defeating the Lady Eagles, 66-50, in Conference USA action Friday night.
Southern Miss had its three-game winning streak snapped and dropped to 11-9 overall and 5-2 in the league, while Tulane improved to 16-4 and 5-2.
Kendra Reed led all scorers with 17 points and Amber Eugene had 15 points. Ashley Langford led Tulane with 13 points, D'Aundra Henry and Jennifer Sands scored 11 points apiece.
"You have to give Tulane credit because they took advantage of our weaknesses tonight," Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "Defensively, did an exception job on us. They were able to make adjustments switching on our screens and not allowing us to get into our offensive rhythm."
Southern Miss opened the game scoring the first five points before Tulane scored its first basket at the 14:54 mark. From there, Tulane outscored Southern Miss 11-4, taking a 13-9 lead.
"You have to give us credit for holding them to only two three-point field goals," McNelis said. "If you would have told me before the game, we would have held them to two and not won, I would have said you were crazy."
Southern Miss then went scoreless for a span of 7:21, while the Green Wave scored 12 unanswered points in the process. Eugene ended the drought with a three-point play, cutting the lead to 11 points, 25-14, at the 4:15 mark in the half.
After leading by 15 points, Anna Patterson knocked down back-to-back three-pointers to get the Eagles within nine points, 31-22, but Luckhurst hit a jumper in the lane with the shot clock winding down to give Tulane an 11-point halftime lead, 33-22.
Tulane opened the second half on a 7-1 run, taking a 40-23 lead, but Southern Miss battled back, using a 14-3 run to cut the lead to six, 43-37, with 10:51 remaining.
Southern Miss actually got within five points, 47-42, but Tulane regrouped and out scored the Eagles 9-2 to take a 56-44 lead. Southern Miss could not get any closer than nine points. The Green Wave closed out the half, connecting on 7-of-8 free throws.
Neither team shot well from the field. Tulane connected on 38.7 percent while Southern Miss shot 34 percent. The Green Wave won the battle of the boards, 40-35.
Southern Miss returns to action when the Lady Eagles travel to UTEP on Sunday with a 3:05 p.m., tip time.
