HATTIESBURG, Miss. -
Ole Miss-Southern Miss Box Score
Despite an early lead, the Southern Miss soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to Ole Miss tonight, in the first meeting between the two schools since the 2000 season.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 2-2-1, while Ole Miss improves to 2-3.
Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead at the 21:28 mark, on an unassisted goal from Kalee Silovsky, the first of her career, scoring from 15 yards out off a defender rebound.
"We started brilliantly," Head Coach Gail Macklin said. "It was an awesome goal from Kalee, set up by Carly Barkley. I said all along that we need to get some goals from somewhere other than the forward position, and we got that tonight. The first half, and then into the second half gave me loads of hope for the future. That's why we're playing teams like Ole Miss. They've got a strong program with one of the nicest facilities we've seen. We're building our program and we're competing well. We're not that far off."
Ole Miss tied the match at 1-1 at the 25:16 mark, on a goal from Danielle Johnson off an assist from Brittney Potts and Hannah Weatherly, as the match was tied 1-1 at halftime.
In the second half, Ole Miss took the lead for good at the 50:32 mark, as Johnson assisted on a goal by Jennifer Hance, giving the Rebels a 2-1 advantage.
Hance then scored her second goal of the game at the 60:10 mark, off another assist from Potts, to make the final score.
"I think we were a little flat towards the end of the match," Macklin said. "Ole Miss subbed in a lot and I think their depth helped."
Ole Miss finished with a 22-4 advantage in shots.
"A majority of their shots came from the outside," Macklin said. "They didn't bother us. We just made a mistake in that back that cost us a goal."
Silovsky, Carly Barkley, Melissa Planells and Sarah McFadden each posted shots in the match. Holly Cox posted five saves in goal.
"We had some good performance in addition to Kalee," Macklin said. "Our back line, with Erin Hamrick, Liz Hamlin and Ashley Hutton are all young, and the future is bright. Jackie Ryan was again great on defense off the bench. Erin Bunyard returned from a head injury and was back in the starting lineup, which was good to see."
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday, meeting in-state rival Mississippi State in a 1 p.m., match in Starkville.
