Soccer Falls To Mississippi State 3-1

The Southern Miss Lady Eagle soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision at in-state rival Mississippi State this afternoon.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 2-3-1, while Mississippi State improves to 1-5.
"We had chances," Head Coach Gail Macklin said. "It's disappointing because we didn't take care of business. We made a few mistakes that cost us."
Mississippi State took a 1-0 lead at the 8:17 mark in the first period, as Treena Ferguson scored off an assist from Brandi Parker. Southern Miss had a chance to knot the game at the 25:02 mark, but a shot by Kim Turner hit the post, as the the Lady Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead at halftime.
Southern Miss knotted the match at 1-1 at the 66:27 mark in the second period, on Jessica Stephens' third goal of the season, off the first career assist from Erin Bunyard.
"We rallied back to tie the game up," Macklin said.
The Lady Eagles had an opportunity at the 73:32 mark, but a header shot by Carly Barkley was saved by Bulldog goalkeeper Stephanie Dallas.
The Lady Bulldogs took the lead for good at the 82:04 mark, as Kevyn Shelledy scored off an assist from Parker, before Ferguson scored her second goal of the match at the 88:02 mark.
Mississippi State finished the match with an 18-12 advantage in shots.
Kim Turner finished with match-best four shots, while Stephens added three. Christina Duvall posted four saves in goal for the Lady Eagles.
"Jessica Stephens played well," Macklin said. "I thought Christina Duvall did too in goal, along with Erin Bunyard in getting her assist and Erin Hamrick. We're going to regroup and get refocused for Sunday."
Southern Miss returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 17, hosting Southeastern Conference member LSU at 2 p.m., at the Marshall Bell Track and Soccer Complex.
