Throughout the 2006 Lady Eagle Soccer season, each player will sit down for an interview with Southern Miss Athletic Media Relations Graduate Assistant Mallory Haynes to discuss everything you want to know about Lady Eagle Soccer.
This week will feature senior midfielder Carly Barkley.
After seeing the first few games, what are your goals and expectations for this season?
"I hope that we can be more consistent throughout the season. We need to finish every half all the way through and not slack off at the end. We definitely want to make it to conference."
What did you do to stay in shape this summer? "Gail (Macklin) provided us with a workout program. I did all of that and ran and played in a summer tournament. I basically tried to play soccer whenever I could."
What do you think makes you such an effective goal scorer? "My teammates. It all comes together when someone plays me the ball or is there for support. It's definitely my teammates."
Being a senior and the team's lead goal scorer, do you notice other members of the team looking up to you for leadership? "I hope they would. I couldn't say any names but I hope they would. If they don't look up to me, I hope they look up to the other seniors and know that we are there for them for anything they need."
In your opinion, which of your teammates is going to have a breakout season and contribute a lot to the team? "I think that Sarah McFadden is going to keep playing strong. Her performances on Friday and today have really shown what a great player she is. I think that she is going to be very beneficial for our attack."
What do you plan to do with a degree in sports administration? "I'm minoring in business too so I hope to pursue anything in a sports organization or company."
If you could change one thing about the game of soccer, what would it be? "No offsides"
Why did you choose to come all the way to Southern Miss from Canada? "The head coach who recruited me before really made it sound like a great place to be. I came down and saw it and I really liked how the campus was big but not too big. I liked what I saw."
If you weren't playing college soccer, what would you do with all of your extra time? "Travel. It's fun to get away."
