Soccer Falls To Houston, 1-0, In Conference USA Opener

Southern Miss dropped its Conference USA opener tonight, falling 1-0 at Houston, in a match delayed by a 30-minute weather delay.
With the loss, the Lady Eagles see their two-match winning streak come to an end, falling to 4-5-1, 0-1 in league play. Houston improves to 7-4, 1-0.
"We were a little flat in the first 15 minutes," Head Coach Gail Macklin said. "Houston capitalized on that. Overall, I thought it was a very even game. It was a good battle and a physical match. We fought hard, but like I've said before, you've got to play for a full 90 minutes."
The lone goal of the match came at the 13:49 mark, as Jordon Godbolt scored off double assists from Sophia Mundy and Alex Terry.
Southern Miss had some chances in the 37th minute, as a shot by Kim Turner went high at the 37:42 mark, while shots by Megan Kolts and Sarah McFadden at the 38:24 and 39:27 mark respectively were saved by Cougar goalkeeper Shelby Scott.
The Lady Eagles had two more opportunities in the second half, but Scott again saved a shot by McFadden at the 55:32 mark and a shot by Turner at the 57:52 mark.
The Cougars finished match with a 15-10 edge in shots. Kim Turner led Southern Miss with four shots, while Sara McFadden added three. Holly Cox made two saves in goal for the Lady Eagles.
Southern Miss will now play at Rice on Sunday, in a 1 p.m., match.
