QUEENS, N.Y. - The Lady Eagle tennis team produced their first shutout this season, winning two out of three doubles positions and sweeping all six singles spots against Long Island University en route to a 7-0 victory Tuesday evening on the professional courts of the National Tennis Center.
With the win, Southern Miss improves to 8-12 (1-3 C-USA) on the spring season, while Long Island University falls to 8-9.
In doubles competition, the Lady Eagles posted wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Natalia Parrado and Courtney Ulrich got things started with their 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles over Amy Hosotsuji and Andrea Pertab, (LIU) and Chelsea Bond and Grace Kammerer defeated Ashley Harvey and Merve Koskal (LIU) at No. 2 doubles to clinch the doubles point for Southern Miss. Long Island University got its only win of the night when Krystina Bachner and Jessica Loose (LIU) defeated Ali Blackett and Nikhila Narra at No. 1 doubles, 9-8 (7-4).
The spring doubles records of Bond/Kammerer (5-1) and Parrado/Ulrich (2-3) improved with their wins, while the record of Blackett/Narra (11-7) fell with their loss.
Southern Miss swept all six singles to complete the shutout. Sherry Price defeated Loose (LIU) at No. 1 singles, 2-6, 6-3, 6-0. Kammerer defeated Koksal (LIU) at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-3. Narra defeated Bachner (LIU) at No. 3 singles, 6-4, 6-1. Blackett defeated Harvey (LIU) at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-4. Bond defeated Hosotsuji (LIU) at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-3, and Ulrich defeated Xenia Roman (LIU) at No. 6 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Price (11-6), Kammerer (6-14), Narra (12-7), Blackett (12-4), Bond (2-8) and Ulrich (7-9) all improved their records with their wins on the spring singles season.
The Lady Eagles finish their three-match road trip on Wednesday, April 12 against Fairleigh Dickinson at 2 p.m.
