Women's Tennis Falls To Louisiana-Lafayette, 6-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Louisiana-Lafayette swept the doubles and won five out of six singles positions to defeat Southern Miss, 6-1, at Tatum Park on Sunday afternoon.
With the loss, Southern Miss fell to 4-6 while Louisiana-Lafayette improved to 7-2 on the spring season.
"Though we lost today, we didn't play bad, and I was happy with our effort," Head Coach Randy Rowley said. "We came out and played well in doubles, and started out singles well, but we weren't able to continue our momentum."
Louisiana-Lafayette claimed the doubles point by winning at all three doubles positions. Tammy Day and Chanell Meijer (ULL) defeated Grace Kammerer and Sherry Price, 8-5, at No. 1 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, Laura Martelli and Celine VanWeydeveld (ULL) won against Ali Blackett and Nikhila Narra, 8-5. In a close match at No. 3 doubles which came down to a tiebreaker, Marine Neveu and Clemence Remy claimed an 8-7 (7-4) victory over Chelsea Bond and Courtney Ulrich.
The doubles records of Kammerer/Price (4-6), Blackett/Narra (4-5) and Bond/Ulrich (0-4) all fell with their losses.
Ali Blackett began singles play with what would be the Lady Eagles only win of the day, as she defeated Remy (ULL) at No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Five straight losses would follow for the Lady Eagles in the rest of singles competition. Meijer (ULL) defeated Narra at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3. Martelli (ULL) won at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-1. At No. 2 singles, VanWeydeveld (ULL) was victorious over Kammerer, 6-0, 6-1. Day (ULL) defeated Price at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 3-6, 10-4, snapping Price's five-match singles winning streak. Neveu (ULL) wrapped up singles action with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Bond at No. 6 singles.
For the singles season, Blackett improved to 5-4, while Bond (0-3), Kammerer (2-8), Narra (6-4), Price (7-3) and Ulrich (4-5) each fell with their losses.
The Lady Eagles return to the court for a home match doubleheader against Alcorn State on Mar. 8 at Tatum Park. The first match will begin at 2 p.m., with the second match scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
