HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced that junior right-handed pitcher Mike Cashion will sit out for the remainder of the season to allow his arm to fully regain its strength after having Tommy John Surgery last spring.
"He is still a few weeks away from being able to pitch effectively," Palmer said. "We felt that he needed to take the extra time and fully allow his arm to gain strength before he pitched. I also believe it wasn't fair to him to bring him back for half a season when he can come back and pitch two full seasons at full strength. It was the best decision for him. I talked with him and his family, and we all feel the same way about it."
Cashion sustained the elbow injury during his Friday night start at East Carolina on April 8. He had surgery later in the month and has been rehabilitating his arm since that time and has been throwing his normal bullpens during the spring.
Cashion was having an outstanding sophomore season when he sustained the elbow injury. He was 4-1 with a 3.62 ERA in 52.2 innings pitched. He struck out 60, walked 19 and opponents were hitting .223 against him.
The Golden Eagles travel to Louisiana-Monroe for a 6:30 p.m. start on Wednesday, March 22, before traveling to UAB for a league-opening three-game Conference USA series in Birmingham, Ala. Friday's game starts at 6:30 p.m., Saturday's at 2 p.m., and Sunday's at 1 p.m.
