HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Anthony Doss, a 6-1, 180-pound, outfielder from Northwest Ranking High School in Brandon, Miss., to a letter of intent and grant-in-aid for the 2007-08 academic year. This marks the third signing of the early signing period for the Golden Eagles.
"Anthony will give us another outstanding left-handed hitter," Palmer said. "He is a good athlete with excellent speed and can hit for average and for power. He will give us another quality outfielder, and I'm excited that he has decided to join the Golden Eagle baseball program."
He will join teammates Todd McInnis and Jordan King, who are freshman on the Golden Eagle roster this season. Last season, he helped lead Northwest Rankin to a 31-6 record and an appearance in the North-State Championship. During his junior season, he helped lead Northwest Rankin to a 36-3 record and the 5A Mississippi State Championship.
Doss hit .409 last year with nine doubles, three triples, seven home runs and a team-leading 43 RBIs. He finished with a .722 slugging percentage and a .522 on-base percentage.
Southern Miss signed Wendell Fairley (OF, 6-2, 175, George County High School in Lucedale, Miss.) and Wade Weathers (LHP, 6-1, 195, Meridian CC, in Meridian, Miss.) in the first week of the early signing period.
The Golden Eagles return 17 letterwinners, including five starting position players, two starting pitchers, and six bullpen pitchers from last year's squad that finished 39-23 overall and tied for fourth-place in Conference USA and advanced to its fourth-straight NCAA Tournament. The Golden Eagles have produced a 172-79 record over the past four years for a 68.5 winning percentage.
Southern Miss opens its 2007 season at home hosting the Coca-Cola Classic on Feb. 16-18. Louisville, Northwestern (La.) State and Southern Illinois join the Golden Eagles to complete the field for the classic.
