HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss Lady Eagle soccer team lost to the Golden Knights of UCF, 2-1, Saturday at the Marshall Bell Track and Field and Soccer Complex.
"I think we rallied back hard and never gave up," Head Coach Gail Macklin said. "There were a lot of positives. We were down 2-0 at the half and we fought back and got a goal. UCF was a great team. Another positive was that a lot of our freshman got some playing time today. I'm really pleased the way the people came off the bench and performed."
The Golden Knights took a one goal lead at the 31:36 mark of the first period when Roberta Pelarigo received a pass from Becca Thomas, sending it past Lady Eagle goalkeeper Holly Cox.
UCF extended their lead to two goals at the 41:45 mark of the first period when Jenny Baker sent a pass to Kristin Bilby, who netted her second goal of the season.
The Lady Eagles came racing back in the second half when senior Sarah Brennan was set to perform a corner kick at 74:22, sending the ball passed Jennifer Manis for a Southern Miss goal.
Brennan led the Lady Eagles in shots with four, while Erin Bunyard, Melissa Planells and Katie Warmington each recorded one.
Sophomore Holly Cox recorded a total of eight saves on the day, while UCF's Manis recorded three.
With the loss, the Lady Eagles move to 4-11-1 overall and 0-7 in the conference. The Golden Knights improve to 10-5-1 overall and 6-1-0 in the conference.
They Southern Miss Lady Eagles return to action at home on Oct. 27&29, as they take on Tulsa and SMU.
