Women's Basketball Loses At Houston, 92-58

HOUSTON, Texas - - Houston women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and never looked back in a 92-58 win over Southern Miss in Conference USA action on Sunday afternoon in Hofheniz Pavilion.
Southern Miss falls to 4-10 and 1-2 in the league, while Houston improved to 5-8 and 2-0.
"We go into each game with certain keys and we talk about them in a pre-game," Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis. "We talked about Houston's three-point shooting and their ability to rebound."
Kendra Reed and Ashley Harrell led Southern Miss with 15 points each. Harrell also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds. Nakazi Glover led all scorers with 21 points for Houston, followed by Ryan Meyers had 19, Tye Jackson had 15 and Emily Fryters chipped in 12 points. Glover also pulled down nine rebounds.
"We looked like we were scared to death out there during the first seven or eight possessions," McNelis said. "You could see the panic in their eyes. However, we were able to make a few adjustments during halftime and we did a much better job the second half."
Houston opened the game scoring the first 14 points before Southern Miss scored its first basket at the 16:06 mark on its seventh possession. Southern Miss was able to cut the lead to eight points, 16-8, at the 13:48 mark.
"You have to give Houston a lot of credit," said McNelis. "They came out and dominated. They did anything and everything they wanted to."
The Cougars then went on a 21-5 run, pushing their lead to 24 points, 37-13. Houston finished the half on an 18-8 run for a 54-21 lead at the half. Houston scored 26 off 17 Lady Eagle turnovers.
"I am very proud of Rachael Manuel and her effort today," McNelis said. "She came out ready to play and gave us good play inside."
Southern Miss struggled from the field, connecting on only 24 percent from the field, while Houston shot an outstanding 62.1 percent from the field, including 50 percent from behind the arc. The Cougars also converted 15-of-18 free throws for 83.3 percent. Southern Miss was 1-of-9 from behind the arc, but shot 88.9 percent from the line.
Southern Miss finished the game shooting 28.3 percent from the field, but shot 82.6 percent from the line. Houston finished the game shooting an impressive 54.1 percent from the field, including 50 percent from three-point range and 73.1 percent from the line. The Cougars also held the rebounding edge, 43-33. Southern Miss returns home to begin a four-game home stand, beginning with UTEP on Jan. 13. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
