Soccer Wins Again, Defeats Murray State 3-0

HATTIESBURG,
Southern Miss now starts its season 3-0 for the first time since the 2001 season.
?We?re very happy,? Head Coach Gail Macklin said. ?We had another good team performance today, which was good to see with the week we?ve had. We only had two practices last week. The girls have responded well. I think we really gelled today as a team.
?We?re off to a good start and have confidence,? Macklin said. ?The girls are very hungry. They were disappointed by not scoring as many goals last season and have taken responsibility to score more goals and get the job done.
Freshman Sarah McFadden put the Lady Eagles ahead 1-0 at the 23:30 mark, thanks to an assist from Micah Stephens, the 10th of her career, as Southern Miss took a 1-0 lead at halftime. McFadden, a native of
In the second period, junior Kim Turner gave the Lady Eagles a 2-0 lead at the 55:12 mark, on an assist from Carly Barkley. Turner also has scored a single goal in each of the team?s three matches in 2005.
Barkley connected on the final goal of the contest at the 70:37 mark, off an assist by Andrea Kerkhoff, her career first, to make the final margin of victory. Barkley also has now scored a goal in each of the team?s matches this season.
Freshman goalkeeper Holly Cox finished with four saves for the Lady Eagles, in posting her first shutout of her career and season, and the first shutout by a Lady Eagle goalkeeper since Leslie Schoeplein shut out Cincinnati 1-0 last season.
McFadden finished with a team-high four shots, while Barkley and Turner added two. Rebekah Clay, Kara Carlile and Courtney Buchanan each had two shots for

Macklin was again pleased with the play of the bench players, as Kalee Silovsky, Malinda Hill, Erin Hamrick and Andrea Kerkhoff all gained valuable minutes of playing time today.
The Lady Eagles will remain in Kentucky Sunday night and Monday, before traveling back to Hattiesburg on Tuesday. On Monday, the team will practice at Murray State. Macklin said she and the team were very appreciative of all the support of everyone on road this weekend.
?Everyone was so great and helpful to us,? Macklin said. ?Everyone went above and beyond and it meant a lot to us.?
