With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 3-3-1 overall, 0-1 in Conference
?I am so pleased with our team?s performance,? Southern Miss Head Coach Gail Macklin said. ?They played magnificent. They have nothing to be ashamed of. Every player gave 100 percent and played with heart. I couldn?t ask for any more than them.?
The Lady Eagles took a 1-0 lead 6:51 into the game. Off a corner kick, Carly Barkley scored her fourth goal this season off an assist by Micah Stephens, her fourth of the year. With that assist, Stephens moved into fourth place all-time in school history.
UCF tied the match at 1-1 at the 37:07 mark, as Roberta Pelarigo scored off assists by Courtney Baines and Jessalyn Withers.
The match was tied at halftime, despite a 13-2 shots advantage, including a 7-1 edge in shots on goal by UCF. Holly Cox made four first half saves for Southern Miss.
In the second half, Kim Turner, who had to leave the first half due to a head injury, put the Lady Eagles ahead 2-1 at the 59:49 mark, on an unassisted goal, her fourth of the season.
?Kim?s goal really lifted the team,? Macklin said. ?After leaving with her head injury, her goal was excellent.?
UCF tied the game at 2-2 with 1:17 remaining in the game, as Kristen Bilby knotted the match off an assist from Jennifer Montgomery.
In the overtime session, Pelarigo netted the game-winning goal for UCF with her second goal of the match, off an assist from Bilby at the 98:53 mark.
?It?s frustrating to go down like we did,? Macklin said. ?That?s just soccer. But if we play like we did tonight, we are going to win some games and get to the Conference USA Tournament. That?s our goal.?
UCF finished the match with a 25-5 shots advantage, including 12-3 shots on goal.
Stephens finished with two shots, one on goal and an assist. Barkley and Turner each scored single goals. Cox finished with a career-high seven saves in goal.
Southern Miss returns to action next weekend, with a Oct. 7 match at UTEP set for 7 p.m. The Lady Eagles will then travel to
