Soccer To Open Conference USA Action Against UCF

Senior Micah Stephens leads the team with five goals, three assists and 13 points on the season.

HATTIESBURG, Miss.? The Southern Miss Lady Eagle soccer team opens Conference USA play on Friday, playing at UCF in a 5:30 p.m., match.

This will be the first meeting between the two schools and will be the first Conference USA match of the season for both schools.

Southern Miss enters the match with a 3-2-1 record. The team has not played since facing Jacksonville State on Sept. 18. The Lady Eagles saw their weekend match against Louisiana Tech, set for Sept. 25, cancelled due to Hurricane Rita.

The Lady Eagles have scored 16 goals on the season and have taken 110 shots. The team has 52 shots on goal, average 18.3 shots per game and 2.57 goals per match.

Senior Micah Stephens, one of Conference USA?s Players to Watch in 2005, leads the team with five goals, three assists, 13 points, 11 shots on goal and two game winning goals. She opened her senior season with two goals and two assists against Louisiana-Lafayette on Aug. 26, before posting the first hat trick of her career against Mississippi Valley State on Sept. 2.

Juniors Carly Barkley, Kim Turner and freshman Sarah McFadden each have three goals on the season. McFadden and Stephens are tied for the team lead in shots with 18. Junior Sarah Brennan has two goals on the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Holly Cox has 18 saves in goal for the Lady Eagles, posting her first career shutout against Murray State on Sept. 4. Christina Duvall, also a freshman goalkeeper, has five saves on the season and posted her first career shutout against Centenary on Sept. 11.

UCF enters Friday?s match with a 3-6 record. UCF has scored 11 goals on the season in 123 shots, with 51 shots on goal. The team averages 13.7 shot per match and 1.22 goals per contest.

Roberta Pelarigo leads the team with three goals, seven points, 33 shots and 14 shots on goal. Jessica Newport and Michelle Decespedes each have two goals on the season. Shannon Wing has a team-high two assists.

Beth Harless has a team-best 18 saves in goal and one shutout, while Jennifer Manis has nine saves and one shutout on the season.

Following the UCF match, Southern Miss continues Conference USA action on the road with a 7 p.m., match at UTEP on Oct. 7 and Oct. 9 match against Tulane, that will be played at 10 a.m., at College Station, Texas.
