Fall Baseball Begins on Monday
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ? The Southern Miss baseball team will begin its official fall workouts starting on Monday, Oct. 3, at 2:30 p.m., at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field. The Golden Eagles will practice Monday through Friday for the next four weeks, and will scrimmage each Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The practices will last throughout the month of October, ending with the annual Black-Gold game. The date for the game hasn?t been set at this time.
"I?m anxious and ready for the start of another year of baseball," Southern Miss Head Coach Corky Palmer said. "We plan to have a lot of competition at several positions this fall, so the coaching staff is looking forward to watching how the players develop. We also need to build depth on our pitching staff, developing both starters as well as short and middle relief pitchers. The coaching staff is ready to get started so we can see the ability of the players."
The Golden Eagles return 20 letterwinners, including five starting position players, five starting pitchers, and five bullpen pitchers from last year?s squad that finished 41-21 overall and tied for second-place in Conference USA, advanced to the Conference USA Tournament semifinals and also to its third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Golden Eagles have produced a 133-56 record over the past three seasons for a 70.4 winning percentage.
