Baseball Announces Third Signee of Late Signing Period

, Miss. ? Southern Miss Baseball Coach Corky Palmer has announced the signing of Michael Ewing, a 6-1, 185-pound left-handed outfielder/first baseman from West Brook High School in Beaumont, Texas, to a national letter of intent and grant in aid for the 2005-06 academic year. This marks the third signee of the spring signing period and the eighth signee overall.

"Michael is a good athlete who will add another quality left-handed hitter to our lineup,? Palmer said. ?He does a good job at the plate, hitting for average, drawing walks and driving in runs. If he continues to work hard, he has the potential to become an outstanding collegiate player.?

As a senior, Ewing hit .379 with nine doubles, two triples, three home runs and 25 RBIs. He walked 17 times and stole six out of seven bases. As a junior, he hit .358 with nine doubles, two triples, four home runs and 22 RBIs. He finished with 20 walks and stole three bases.

Ewing was a four-time all-district and three-time all-region selection and named a two-time All-State honoree by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. As a senior this past season, he helped lead West Brook to a 26-7-1 record and an appearance in the 5A regional quarterfinals.

The Golden Eagles other signees are Luke Adkins (OF/5-9/165/ Nettleton HS, Nettleton, Miss.), Ryan Belanger (RHP/5-10/160/Copiah-Lincoln CC, Wesson, Miss.), Jeremy Davis (OF/5-11/180/Cathedral HS, Natchez, Miss.), Brian Dozier (SS/5-11/170/Itawamba Agricultural HS, Fulton, Miss.), Bailey Hartel (SS/5-10/170/Pearl River CC, Hattiesburg, Miss.), Toddrick Johnson (OF/6-1/180/Meridian CC, Meridian, Miss.) and Keith Winstead (C/6-3/195/Pearl River CC, Hattiesburg, Miss.).

Southern Miss finished the 2004 season with a 41-21 overall record, the third-straight 40-win season, setting a school record for consecutive 40-win seasons. The Golden Eagles also made their third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance, also setting a record for consecutive tournament appearances, and sixth appearance overall. Southern Miss finished with a 21-9 record in Conference USA, the third-straight year that the Golden Eagles have won 20 or more league games and tied for the second place.
