Southeastern Louisiana Downs Southern Miss, 4-2, In Jackson
The Lions (22-26) scored four runs on six hits and committed one error, while Southern Miss (32-14) scored two runs on nine hits and committed one error. Southern Miss left nine runners on base and hit into three double plays.
Trey Sutton was a bright spot for the Golden Eagle offense, as he registered a career night, going 5-for-5 at the plate and scoring two runs. David Steele finished with two hits for Southern Miss, and Marc Maddox and Brad Willcutt each finished with a hit and an RBI.
Rob Burns, (0-2) making his first career start at Southern Miss, pitched five innings, gave up three runs, only one earned on five hits and struck out three. Nick Valluzzo pitched the final three innings, gave up one run on one hit, walked one and struck out one.
Southern Miss took the early 1-0 lead in the first inning. Sutton led off with a single up the middle to lead off the game, moved to second when Maddox walked, stole third and scored on Willcutt?s single to left field.
The Lions tied the game in the second inning. Ryan Spencer doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning, moved to third on Jason Waguespack?s sacrifice bunt and scored when Rob Territo singled up the middle.
The Lions added their fourth run in the sixth inning to take a 4-1 lead. Steve Clevenger walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a single through the left side by Randy Roth. Both runners advanced to second and third on Spencer?s ground out to short and Clevenger scored when Waguespack flew out to center.
