Southern Miss Women?s Tennis Team Downs Memphis, 4-1

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Southern Miss women?s tennis team defeated Memphis, 4-1, at the Conference USA Women?s Tennis Champion at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center.
"I was pleased with the way we came out and played today, especially after the way we lost on Thursday," Head Coach Randy Rowley said. "We came out with a business-type attitude and dominated the match."
Southern Miss took the early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Nicola Slater and Grace Kammerer defeated Andrea Feichtinger and Alex Tjioe, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles. Ali Blackett and Jennifer Sibille defeated Kristin Noble and Christina Wieser at No. 3 doubles, 8-5.
The Lady Eagles then won at No. 2, 3 and 5 singles to claim the match. Sherry Price downed Feichtinger in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 2 singles. Nikhila Narra defeated Brooke Cowie, 6-4, 6-1, at No. 3 singles. Kammerer clinched the match with a 7-5, 6-0, win at No. 5 singles against Wieser.
Memphis (5-14) got its only point when Marlene Direnstrofer defeated Slater, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. The remainder of the matches were suspended with Sibille winning the first set, 6-3. Courtney Ulrich was leading at No. 6 singles, 7-6 (6), 2-2.
"In the last couple of weeks, Sherry Price has really stepped up and showed that she is ready to put this team on her shoulders and lead us forward."
Southern Miss plays Charlotte at noon on Saturday.
