Women's Tennis Picks Up 5-2 Win Over UAB
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ? The Southern Miss women?s tennis team picked up a 5-2 victory over Conference USA foe UAB.
The Lady Eagles opened the match taking the doubles point, 2-1, and then won four of the singles matches to take the final victory.
"I'm so pleased with the way our team played today," Southern Miss Head Coach Randy Rowley said. "We have been wanting to have that breakthrough match, and we had it today. UAB has dominated us the last two years, and for our team to battle and win the way we did, it says a lot for the progress of our program."
UAB's Gulsah Esen and Ornischa Maier-Knapp won the No. 1 doubles match over Nikhila Narra and Sherry Price, 8-6. But Southern Miss took both of the other two matches as the tandem of Nicola Slater and Grace Kammerer defeating UAB's Julia von Samson and Antonia Nugent, 8-2, while Lady Eagles Jennifer Sibille and Ali Blackett topped Lady Blazers Annemieke Elsholz and Jana Wild, 8-6.
In singles play, Slater defeated Maier-Knapp, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3, while Price defeated Esen at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 6-1. Narra topped von Samson, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4, in the No. 3 slot, and Blackett beat Elsholz, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5. UAB won the points at No. 4 and No. 6, respectively, as Samrin Tanzeem won over Kammerer 6-3, 6-1, and Nugent blanked Sibille, 6-0, 6-0.
Southern Miss returns to action at home on Sunday, hosting Arkansas State, at Tatum Park. Match time is set for noon.
