Ole Miss Takes Final Season Meeting, 8-3
JACKSON, Miss. ? Ole Miss scored five runs in the first three innings and three runs in the final two innings to defeat Southern Miss 8-3, Tuesday, before 3,212 at Smith Wills Stadium in the Entergy Magnolia Classic.
With the win, Ole Miss improves to 25-12, while Southern Miss falls to 27-9. Ole Miss wins the season series, 2-1.
Ole Miss took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second. Brian Pettway started the inning with a single and went to second on a walk by Jon-Jon Hancock. Pettway and Hancock both advanced to second and third respectively on a infield single by Justin Henry. Zack Cozart followed with an RBI groundout, before Hancock and Henry scored on a two-RBI double by Miles Franklin, making the score 3-0.
The Rebels added two runs in the third, on a two-run home run by Mark Wright, to take a 5-0 lead.
Southern Miss made the score 5-2 in the third. With one out, Chris Matesich walked, but was out at second on a fielder?s choice by Jody Blount. Blount advanced to second on the play, thanks to a throwing error by Rebel second baseman Henry. Marc Maddox followed with a double off the centerfield wall, which scored Blount. Trey Sutton brought Maddox home with a double of his own down the right field line, to cut the Rebel lead to three.
The Golden Eagles had a chance to get closer in the fifth, as Blout and Maddox were on third and second respectively, but Brad Willcutt popped out to second to end the inning.
Southern Miss made the score 5-3 in the seventh. With one out, Matesich was hit by a pitch, stole second and reached third on a wild pitch, before scoring on a RBI single by Blount. Blount stole second and reached third on a single to right field by Maddox. The Rebels changed pitchers to Tommy Baumgardner, and prevented further damage, as he got Sutton to ground into the inning ending double-play, as Rebel second baseman Henry tagged Maddox out, before throwing Sutton out at first.
Ole Miss got that run back in the eighth, on a RBI double by Chris Coghlan, to make the score 6-3.
The Rebels got their final two runs in the ninth, as Henry hit a two-run inside the park home run, which provided the final margin of victory.
Stoney Stone (2-0) got the win for Ole Miss, as the Rebels used six pitchers in the contest. Stone pitched four innings, allowing three hits, two runs, while walking one and striking out one.
Cole Basinger (3-1) took the loss for Southern Miss, pitching three innings, allowing five hits, five runs, while walking two and striking out two.
Maddox led Southern Miss with two hits and an RBI, while Sutton and Blount each had single RBI.
Southern Miss returns to action in an important three-game series against Tulane Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Pete Taylor Park. Game times are set for 6:30 p.m., on Friday, 4 p.m., on Saturday, with the series finale Sunday at 1 p.m.
