Baseball Falls To Intrastate Foe, 9-1
With the loss, the Golden Eagles dropped to 9-3 on the season, while the nationally ranked Rebels improved to 10-3 overall.
For the game, Southern Miss managed just one run on three hits, and Ole Miss scored nine runs on 14 hits. Neither team committed an error.
After Southern Miss' Trey Sutton led off with a single, the Golden Eagles couldn't muster any offense against the strong pitching of Ole Miss' starter Matt Maloney, who retired 21-straight batters following that first hit.
While the Southern Miss offense struggled, the Rebels steadily put runs on the board, scoring two in the second and one each in the third and fourth innings.
It wasn't until the score was 7-0 that the Golden Eagles added their first run of the game. In the inning, Jason Lowery led off with a single and advanced to third on Beau Griffin ground out to first. Two at-bats later Jody Blount brought Lowery home with a single through the left side, giving the visitors their lone run of the game.
But Ole Miss added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth for the final score.
Sutton, Lowery and Blount each had one hit for Southern Miss, while Blount had the lone RBI.
Stephen Head led Ole Miss with four hits and two runs in five at bats, while Cooper Osteen added three hits and a pair of runs. Mark Wright had three RBIs on two hits, one being a home run.
For Southern Miss, Barry Bowden (1-1) suffered the loss, allowing four runs on five hits with five strikeouts in 3.1 innings of work. Brad Owen threw for 2.2 innings, giving up just two hits. Rob Burns and Will Matlock combined to pitch the final two innings, giving up five total runs on seven hits.
Maloney (3-0) picked up the win, allowing just three hits and one run with 10 strikeouts in eight innings of work. Brian Pettway threw the final frame, retiring the side on strikeouts.
