Baseball Claims Cardinal Classic Championship
BEAUMONT, Texas.? The Southern Miss baseball team scored three runs in the top of the 10th inning to claim a 5-2 victory over Lamar, Sunday, in final day action of the Cardinal Classic.
With the win, Southern Miss wins the Cardinal Classic Tournament and improves to 9-2 on the season. Lamar falls to 9-6.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth. Chase Richards led off the inning with a walk and stole second. Cantu followed with a bunt single to put runners on the corners. Michael Ambort grounded into a double play, but Richards was able to score on the play.
Southern Miss tied the game at 1-1 in the seventh. Kevin Coker reached on an error by pitcher Derrick Gordon with two outs and scored on Jody Blount's double to right center field.
The Golden Eagles added another run in the eighth, on an RBI single from Jason Lowery that scored Beau Griffin, who was on base thanks to a fielder?s choice.
Lamar tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the inning, on a RBI ground out by Ambort.
In the 10th inning, Trey Sutton led off the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Beau Griffin. Marc Maddox followed with a double to left center to drive in the go-ahead run. Brad Willcutt singled to drive in Maddox. The Golden Eagles closed out the scoring on a single to right field by Lowery, and an error by Chad Barbre in right allowed Willcutt to score all the way from first base.
Tyler Perrett (2-0) earned the win for Southern Miss, allowing one hit, walking one and striking out one. Harrington took the loss for Lamar, allowing two hits and two runs.
Southern Miss starter Mike Cashion pitched seven strong innings, allowing six hits and two runs, walked two and struck out four, to get a no-decision.
Sutton, Maddox, Lowery and Blount each had two hits for Southern Miss, with Maddox and Blount recording doubles. Cantu had three hits to lead Lamar.
