Baseball Defeats Mississippi Valley State, 11-4
HATTIESBURG,
Barry Bowden (2-1) earned his second win of the season, pitching seven innings, giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits, walking five and striking out eight. Nick Valluzzo pitched the final two innings, giving up two walks and striking out three. Delta Devil starting pitcher Danny Hall (3-4) dropped his fourth game of the season, pitching one inning, giving up four runs, two earned, on five hits and walking two.
Kevin Coker finished with two hits and two RBIs, and Marc Maddox, Trey Sutton and Blount each finished with two hits.
Southern Miss (15-5) scored 11 runs on 17 hits and committed two errors, while
Mississippi Valley State took an early 3-0 lead in the first inning off of Williams? sixth home run of the season, a three-run shot over right field. Ross Myers and Ian Corona walked to lead off the inning, before Williams? home run.
Southern Miss answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Maddox walked, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Sutton?s single to center. Sutton advanced to second on the center fielder?s throw on his hit, Brad Willcutt walked and Jason Lowery singled to right field to load the bases.
The Golden Eagles added a single run in the fourth inning to extend their lead to 5-3. Chris Matesich reached on a one-out infield single, advanced to second on a throwing error by MVSU third baseman Chris Falls and scored on Maddox?s single to center field.
Southern Miss added four more runs in the fifth inning to push its lead to 9-3.
The Delta Devils added a single run in the sixth inning to cut the Golden Eagle lead to 9-4. Cory Littleton reached on an infield single, advanced to second on a throwing error by Matesich, stole third base and scored when Noah Trujillo flew out to center field.
The Golden Eagles tacked on two more runs in the seventh inning to push their lead to 11-4, the final outcome. Matesich walked to lead off the inning and stole second before Maddox was walked. Sutton doubled to center field to plate both Matesich and Maddox.
Southern Miss returns to action on Friday when it hosts Cincinnati for a three-game Conference USA weekend series at Pete Taylor Park/Hill Denson Field, on Friday-Sunday, March 25-27. Friday?s game begins at 6:30 p.m., Saturday?s at 3 p.m., and Sunday?s at 1 p.m.
