Southern Miss Claims Lady Eagle Classic Tennis Title

Ali Blackett clinched the match at No. 5 singles

GULFPORT, Miss. ? Southern Miss won its own Lady Eagle Classic, defeating Troy, 4-1, in women?s tennis action at the Bayou Bluff Tennis Club on Sunday. Southern Miss finished the tournament 3-0, while Troy and West Virginia finished with 2-1 records each and Hofstra, 0-3.

?I am so pleased with the way we came out and competed all weekend,? Head Coach Randy Rowley said. ?The girls had to help run this tournament and they were able to keep their focus when they played.?

Southern Miss claimed the doubles point, winning the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Nicola Slater and Grace Kammerer fought back from a 5-2 deficit to defeat Suzanne Jones and Tsi-Tsi Masviba at No. 1 doubles after Nicole Shaw and Shaimaa Elsisi (Troy) won No. 2 doubles against Nikhila Narra and Sherry Price, 8-3. Ali Blackett and Jennifer Sibille clinched the point for the Lady Eagles with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles over Christina Mancheno and Luz Garcia (Troy).

?I believe the doubles got us off to a good start,? Rowley said. ?This is the third time to play this team and we?ve never won a match until today. That?s a good sign that we are headed in the right direction.?

Troy quickly tied the match at 1-1 after Mancheno defeated Kammerer in straight sets without dropping a point, 6-0, 6-0. Slater then battled Masviba at No. 1 singles to give Southern Miss a 2-1 edge with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Price then put the Lady Eagles up 3-1 following her 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles against Jones. Ali Blackett clinched the match win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles over Garcia.

No. 3 and No. 6 matches were suspended.

Southern Miss returns to action on Mar. 16 when the Lady Eagles play Texas Tech in Miami, Fla.
