Southern Miss held off a late rally by MississippiState, to defeat the Bulldogs 64-57, in women's basketball action Tuesday night.
With the win Southern Miss improved to 2-3 and snapped a four-game losing streak to Mississippi State in the process. State dropped to 1-4.
"This is a great win for us because Mississippi State is a good team, they are a very well coached team," Head Coach Joye Le-McNelis said. "We've made a lot of strides with our young team and we're moving in the right direction."
Kendra Reed led all scorers with a game-high 22 points. Ashley Boehnel and Ashley Harrell added 12 and 11 points, respectively. Reed just missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Natasha Henderson led State with a double-double, 12 points ad 11 rebounds, followed by Robin Porter and Miayorka Johnson with 11 points apiece. Porter also had a double-double with 10 rebounds.
"Our players did a tremendous job on the boards tonight," McNelis said. "I know we gave up 19, but we out rebounded them (State). In the first half we were phenomenal on the glass."
Southern Miss led 58-44 at the 4:13 mark in the game, when State began its comeback and outscored the Lady Eagles 13-3 over four minutes, cutting the lead to three points, 60-57. The only points for Southern Miss came from the free throw line. Reed sealed the game when she hit two free throws with 12 seconds remaining.
The Lady Eagles finished the game shooting 38.7 percent from the field and 61.9 percent from the line. Southern Miss held the rebounding edge, 47-42.
Southern Miss struck first with Harrell hitting a three-pointer. MSU answered with a three-pointer to tie the game. Southern Miss used an 8-4 run, taking an 11-7 lead, but State answered with a 7-2 run for a 14-13 lead at the 10:48 mark.
Southern Miss then scored four unanswered points, but State responded with a 4-0 run also to regain the lead at 18-17. Southern Miss then used a 7-0 Reed-run, taking a 24-18 lead with 2:55 before the half. The Lady Eagles led by as many as seven points, 28-21, before ending the half leading 30-25.
Both teams struggled from the field with the Lady Eagles shooting 36.1 percent and State 32.3. Southern Miss led 30-25 at the half.
Southern Miss continues to play on the road, playing in the N. C. State tournament Dec. 4-5, in Raleigh, NC. The Golden Eagles will play Liberty University in the second game of the tournament, while NC State plays Elon in the first game. Game time is set for 2 p.m., central.
