South Alabama connected on 24-of-30 free throws in the second half, as it defeated Southern Miss 84-72, tonight, in the Mitchell Center.
With the loss, Southern Miss falls to 0-2 on the season, while South Alabama improves to 2-0.
Ashley Harrell came off the bench for Southern Miss, scoring with a team-high 19 points followed by Kendra Reed with 13, Amber Eugene had 11 and Ashley Boehnel chipped in 10 points. Lady Jaguar JoAnna Williams led all scorers with 26 points with Cortney Brown and Valencia Boswell scored 11 points each.
"I am very proud of the way our players fought back tonight," Head Coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "I'm disappointed with the way we defended. We only made 12 turnovers tonight, after making 34 on Friday. That's a step in the right direction."
Southern Miss jumped out to an early 10-7 lead, but South Alabama fought back to take a 13-10 lead on a 7-0 run. The Lady Eagles found themselves in early foul trouble, putting the Jaguars in the bonus at the free throw line, with 13:03 to play in the first half.
South Alabama extended its lead to nine, 21-12, before Reed connected on a three-pointer at the 7:13 mark. Southern Miss eventually cut the lead to four, 25-21, with just over four minutes before the half, before South Alabama took that margin to the dressing room at halftime, 32-28.
The Lady Jaguars opened the second half on a 10-2 run, taking a 10-point lead, 40-30. South Alabama would lead by as many as 17 points, 70-38, with 4:46 remaining in the game, but the Lady Eagles stormed back, cutting the lead to nine, 77-68, with 1:14 to play. But the team could not get closer, falling by 12, 84-72.
Southern Miss returns home to host the Lady Eagle Classic, Nov. 25-26. Southern Miss plays Florida A&M at 6 p.m., and Alcorn State faces Northwestern State at 8 p.m. on Friday. The consolation game is set for 6 and 8 p.m., on Saturday.
