Baseball Releases 2006 Schedule

HATTIESBURG, Miss.-- Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer announced the 2006 baseball schedule today.
It features nine NCAA Tournament teams from last year (Wichita State, South Alabama, Stetson, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, East Carolina, Alabama, Rice and Tulane), three Super Regional teams (Ole Miss, Tulane and Rice) and one College World Series teams (Tulane).
The Golden Eagles return 20 letterwinners, including five starting position players, four starting pitchers, and five bullpen pitchers from last year's squad that finished 41-21 overall and tied for second-place in Conference USA, advanced to the Conference USA Tournament semifinals and also to its third-straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Golden Eagles have produced a 133-56 record over the past three seasons for a 70.4 winning percentage.
"We're excited about our schedule for the 2006 season," said eighth-year Southern Miss Head Baseball Coach Corky Palmer. "We always try to play the best competition that will not only challenge our club, but also prepare us for Conference USA competition. The conference continues to be one of the best in the nation, after sending four teams to the four last year."
Southern Miss opens its season on Feb. 15, in a 3 p.m., contest against Nicholls State at Pete Taylor Park. The team then travels to the South Alabama Tournament, to face three NCAA Tournament teams, Wichita State on Feb. 17, Stetson on Feb. 18 and South Alabama on Feb. 19.
The Golden Eagles face Alabama in Tuscaloosa on Mar. 15 at 6:30 p.m., Ole Miss on Mar. 28 in Oxford at 6:30 p.m., also facing the Rebels in Jackson on April 4 at 6:30. Southern Miss also hosts in-state rival Mississippi State in a two-game series on April 25-26, both games slated for a 6:30 p.m., start.
Other non-conference games include a three-game series at Dallas Baptist on April 7-8, while hosting non-conference foes Illinois State in a three game series on Mar. 3-5, Troy State in a three-game series at Pete Taylor Park from Mar. 17-19, and a three-game series against Buffalo from Mar. 10-12.
Away Conference USA series include trips to UAB (Mar. 24-26), Rice (April 21-23), Marshall (April 28-30) and Tulane (May 12-14).
Southern Miss will host league series' against Memphis (Mar. 31-April 2), Houston (April 14-16), East Carolina (May 5-7) and UCF (May 18-20).
The Conference USA Tournament will be hosted by Rice and played in Houston, Texas from May 24-28.
