HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- It took two halves and a pair of overtimes to decide the outcome of the Southern Miss and Houston Conference USA clash in women's soccer on Friday, and in the end, the two teams fought their way to a 1-1 draw.
The host Lady Eagles and visiting Cougars drew the tie to open Southern Miss' final weekend of regular season play at the Southern Miss Track and Soccer Complex.
"That's just the way it's been all season," Southern Miss Head Coach Gail Macklin said. "We had chances, but we just couldn't score. We played in spells today, which we haven't done in a while, and we know we can't do that in Conference USA.
"But we probably got what we deserved. With the way both teams played, a tie was a fair result. But at the end of the day, we are close, but we are just not there yet."
Southern Miss got on the board first in the 29th minute when Megan Kolts parlayed a Micah Stephens pass into the first goal of the game, giving the Lady Eagles the early 1-0 advantage. With the assist, Stephens now has 13 career assists, moving into third place all-time.
The score stood until the 43rd minute when Houston's Kristin Carlyle served Sophia Mundy for the tying goal, sending the two teams into the break with the game knotted 1-1.
That would mark the end of the scoring as the match turned into a defensive battle over the second half and subsequent two overtime periods.
While the scoring didn't show it, the Southern Miss attack fared well, with the Lady Eagles out-shooting Houston 19-12 overall and holding a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Houston's Stephanie Pucek finished with a match-high eight saves in the contest, while Southern Miss' Holly Cox finished with two.
The Lady Eagles now turn their attention to the regular-season finale against Rice on Sunday. First kick is set for noon. The match will be the final one for a trio of Southern Miss seniors, including Micah Stephens, Katie McClary and Chelsey Brown. Sunday also marks the final day of Celebrating 30 Years of Women's Athletics at Southern Miss.
